I always tried to stop him from hurting her but I never succeeded—I was too lanky— and I always just made him angrier. I watched as Mama glimpsed above the fire to the beaten down rose hidden behind glass and smiled. Paul finally had had enough of her enjoying her punishment, so he reached up, grabbed the flower vase, and smashed it over her head.
